Understanding Your Thyroid and How It Connects to the Adrenals
The thyroid gets many of the blunt of our health blames, especially when it comes to stubborn weight gain. This post will shed some clarity on how this gland functions, what effects it and some surprisingly simple ways to address the root cause so you can balance it out.
The thyroid tends to get a lot of flack.
We often call it out as the blunt of blames and frustrations when it comes to different health struggles...especially weight related, but also hormonal.
The thyroid may not necessarily be the root cause of your weight or hormonal issues, of course it could be contributing to them, but people are quick to blame the complex thyroid for their difficulties.. but most of the time, there is more to the story.
In this post, we hope to offer some understanding around this often misunderstood gland so we can cut it a bit of slack and gain a better grasp on how best to support healthy thyroid function on a daily basis.
It is important to understand how the thyroid connects to the rest of your body and to remember how innately intelligent your body is. Everything that is happening to you hormonally right now, is happening protectively and intelligently in your body's attempt keep homeostasis/balance. We sometimes forget that.
Today, I want to share a really simple overview of how the thyroid is controlled and some of the things that influence it-- with the goal of connecting a few dots for you-- it's funny, sometimes when you simplify this picture-- the optimal starting place for balancing presents itself.. and it's often way less complex than you thought.
Let's jump in!
What controls your thyroid?
In short-- the Hypothalamus.
"Oh snap, Danielle... the Hypothalmus.. you mean that thing that's part of the HPA axis (Hypothalamic Pituitary Adrenal axis) that all you adrenal experts are talking about all the time?"
Yes, babe. That thing that links your nervous system to your endocrine system.
That thing- the Hypothalamus.
How does that control work?
The hypothalamus acts like a sensor inside the nervous system.
It sends signals to the pituitary gland (yes, that other part of the HPA axis) letting it know if it should make MORE or LESS of certain hormones, including an important one called Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH).
Thyroid Stimulating Hormone is a hormone that then tells (or STIMULATES) the thyroid to make more or ease up on the production of different hormones; two important ones are T3 and T4. These hormones help control how your body stores and uses energy and they are largely made up of the mineral, iodine.
KEY TAKE AWAY:
TSH gets its instructions from the hypothalamus and is made in the pituitary gland. TSH then stimulates the thyroid to make essential thyroid hormones, T3 and T4. This all happens along the Hypothalamic Pituitary Thyroid Axis (HPT).
Our bodies make much more T4, but T3 is the more potent and active hormone of the two.
When needed, T4 can be converted by the body into the active form, T3 . This occurs in organs like the liver, intestines, kidneys, and lungs. This is important to be aware of because, for many, this conversion can be impaired if these organs aren't doing their thing as optimally as they could be (...leaky gut sufferers, take note!).
MAKING SENSE OF YOUR LEVELS: hypo or hyper THyroidism
Okay, so maybe you got your blood work done and are wondering how it's being looked at.
Blood tests are looking at the levels of thyroid hormones like T3, T4 and TSH, and what these levels are like- relative to one another.
Hypothyroidism
If your TSH is high (which essentially means the brain is telling the thyroid to make lots of thyroid hormones-- T3 and T4), and if your thyroid hormones (T3 and T4) are low.. then this appears that the TSH is yelling at the thyroid for more hormones to be made, but the thyroid isn't making enough to keep up with the demand... so it will appear like your thyroid is under-functioning (HYPOthyroidism).
Hyperthyroidism
If your TSH is low compared to the amount of T3 and T4 your thyroid is making, it's the opposite situation-- it's like TSH is saying "no more" but the thyroid isn't listening... making MORE hormones than demanded by the brain, which then appears that the thyroid is actually over-active (HYPERthyroidism). In this case you'll have HIGH thyroid hormones (T3 and T4) relative to TSH, so it appears the thyroid is making TOO much.
Make sense?
Okay, there's another important hormone to throw into the mix..
Thyroxine-binding globulin (TBG).
TBG is important because it's a carrier protein. It binds with T3 and T4 and brings these hormones to the tissues that need it via the blood. Essentially, it brings the thyroid hormones to where they need to go.
Most of the T3 and T4 made will be bound and carried to the tissues via TBG-- so you can see why the amount of TBG and the ability of T3 and T4 to bind to it would be important for bringing usable hormones to the tissues that need them, right?
Here's the thing:
The production of TBG and the ability for thyroid hormones to bind to TBG can be influenced by other hormones such as estrogen..and dun dun dunn... cortisol. Interruptions from factors like this can confuse the thyroid and can influence how much and how effectively thyroid hormones are carried in the blood to the tissues that require it and this can effect how things appear on our blood test... and of course, how we feel.
What this means: sex hormone imbalance (like estrogen dominance) or stress hormone imbalance (due to adrenal overwhelm) can throw off the efficiency and effectiveness of how this all works.
CONNECTING THE DOTS- WHAT'S THE PROBLEM?
To summarize, here are some common reasons why your levels might not be not be showing up properly on your blood tests or why you are showing signs and symptoms of thyroid imbalance.
Nutritional Deficiency: Sometimes our bodies lack the building blocks to make hormones like T3 and T4 effectively. Iodine and selenium are key minerals used by the thyroid to make them.
Conversion Issues: Sometimes it's issues with the conversion like I mentioned above.
When T4 can't be converted to the active form T3, it leads to demands for more hormones from the body. This keeps the thyroid working hard to make more thyroid hormones to keep up wiht the demands, but due to an imbalance in usable hormones due to conversion issues you can see how things can start to get messy.
Binding Issues: Other times, it's that thyroid hormones can't BIND to the TBG carrier protein because of sex or stress hormone imbalance and/or influences from diet or our environment -- factors such as excess fluoride or bromine consumption, heavy metal toxicity, adrenal stress, high estrogen, certain medications, and high stress hormones.
"High stress hormones", she says... hmm.
I see where this is going...
THE IMPACT OF THE ADRENALS ON THE THYROID
In many cases... or dare I say, MOST cases, the communication occurring along the Hypothalamic Pituitary Thyroid Axis (HPT).. is being disturbed by the messages being delivered along the SOS Hypothalamic Pituitary ADRENAL (HPA) axis.
Which one do you think will take precedence-- the survival response or the metabolic response?
.... Right.
Saving your life and surviving is always a priority.. so the HYPOTHALAMIC PITUITARY ADRENAL axis communication takes the reigns in this situation.
The adrenals come into play when there is stress present that the body needs to deal with, whether that stress be physical stress, inflammation, work stress, emotional stress, life-threatening stress, lack of sleep stress, etc.
The adrenals are also told what to do based on what that bossy pituitary gland is telling them to do.
How the Thyroid is Affected
Oh wait, double edge sword here---
When stress hormones like cortisol are elevated and our body is in a perceived state of stress, metabolism regulation from the thyroid is no longer a priority to the body-- in this case the pituitary gland will tell the thyroid to ease up on making more thyroid hormones (it's got bigger fish to fry right now), add this to underlying issues with conversion or thyroid hormone binding issues and you can see how this can be a bit of a cascading disaster.
The bottom line is that your adrenals come into play with this whole thyroid cascade.
Regardless of what type of thyroid issues you are experiencing, the adrenals are worth addressing, paying attention to and giving some TLC to. Sometimes when you do this, everything else has a funny way of working itself back into balance.
Are you wondering how to support your thyroid by calming down your adrenal response and regulating this hormonal cascade once and for all? Self care and balanced, clean nutrition are vital.

Supporting Adrenal Fatigue with Supplements: 3 Common Mistakes
In a perfect world, there would be a magic pill to help us recover from adrenal fatigue instantly.
In the fast paced world we live in, this is something many are searching for.. and in attempt to support and repair their adrenals, many spend hundreds to thousands of dollars on natural health products.
Here at HealYourAdrenalFatigue.com (HYAF), we are big proponents of a holistic approach to recovery.
The truth is that though in some cases a major trauma can fatigue the adrenals very quickly, for the majority, the path to burnout has been a slow and steady build over a longer period of time. Of course, we each have a different story, but my point is that when it comes to adrenal recovery-- there is no magic pill and it can take a while for things to come back into balance.
There is no magic pill.
Even though there is no quick fix, supplements can be a wonderful way to help support and nourish a depleted body. They can be a helpful tool to incorporate into your holistic recovery plan.
Today, I'm excited to share with you some supplement tips and tricks to optimize their effects and also, to highlight some of the common mistakes I see occurring all the time with our clients in practice.
Mistake #1: absorption is hindered by gut health issues
I see this all the time, people with all sorts of adrenal fatigue symptoms taking various supplements in tablet, capsule or soft gel form.
I'm not saying that this in itself is a bad thing, but many AF sufferers struggle with the integrity of their intestinal health, hence all the digestive issues we experience.
To maximize the bang for your buck, you want to make sure that you're able to breakdown, absorb and metabolize the supplements you are taking. Makes sense right?
Recommendation: acknowledge gut health situation and start there first
When considering starting a supplement plan, first check-in with your gut health. How has your digestion/elimination been lately?
If you suspect this needs attention, then I recommend starting with some gut health focused supplements and dietary tweaks first.
Examples:
Have a glass of lemon water before meals
Focus on chewing food very well to take stress of the digestive process
Supplementing L-Glutamine Powder (5 grams mixed with a glass of water before bed) to help with repair of the intestinal lining
Digestive Enzymes (take with each meal to help with breakdown and absorption)
Try taking a combination powder supplement that helps restore gastrointestinal integrity such as this one.
If you are anxious to add some sort of adrenal support to the mix, you could start lightly with some ashawaghanda root powder, which you can add to smoothies, chia puddings, elixirs and more.
Mistake #2:Not using the right type of supplement for your stage of adrenal fatigue
This is another big one. We can easily read suggestions and success stories on forums of Facebook groups from others who have or are struggling with adrenal fatigue, but every body is different and the stage of adrenal fatigue you are in makes a big difference in the way that natural compounds (like certain herbs and glandulars) behave. The way you want these compounds to behave will depend on what your cortisol picture looks like. For instance, if you find struggle to get out of bed in the morning (a sign that your cortisol is too low when it is supposed to be high), then you will want to avoid herbal formulas that are created to help reduce cortisol. On the opposite side of the spectrum, if you're tired but wired at night, it could mean your cortisol level is too high when it should be low-- and using adaptogenic herbs of stimulatory nature at this time can actually exacerbate this issue. Certain adaptogenic herbs like maca, panax ginseng, licorice and holy basil have their time and place, but when used at the wrong stage of burnout can result in a completely opposite reaction to what was desired in the first place. This is because they stimulate a cortisol boost which is not good for over active adrenals or adrenals that are burnt-out.
Recommendation: Know your stage or start with simple nutrients instead of herbs
I recommend professional testing to get a baseline of where your adrenals are at and clear insight on what's going on hormonally. Though an investment up front, this will take out the guessing component and help you create a plan that is specific and tailored to your needs. If I had done this from the get go when I was struggling, I would of saved hundreds and hundreds of dollars that I spent experimenting with different supplements. Working with a professional can make all the difference in selecting the right supplements, at the right doses for your body, to help you see and feel the results of your recovery efforts more effectively.
If you'd rather not get tested or if you just want to start somewhere, then I recommend opting for basic co-founding nutrients that the body can use (and needs to use) in any stage of adrenal fatigue.
Examples:
Magnesium
Vitamin C
B-complex (especially B5 and B6)
Zinc
Mistake #3: doing too much at once
Being over zealous and going out and purchasing a whole bunch of different products and superfoods at one time can be over stimulating for the body.
Without understanding what to take, how and in what form to take it, and at what dose you should take it in, can actually impede your recovery and in some cases, when taking too much of something at the wrong time, even make things worse. This can occur for instance, if you are over stimulating your adrenals in the early stages of adrenal fatigue when they are already in over drive, or again in the later stages when they are burnt out.
When you jump into taking numerous sorts of adrenal support at once, it's hard to tell which is causing which benefit/reaction you may be experiencing and the truth is, when you start taking something new, your probably won't notice any benefit for at least 2 weeks.
Recommendation: Start start slow
I know I've said it before, but for best results, I will have to recommend working with a professional. The time, money and guess work it will spare you is truly significant.
I know you though, you're antsyin the meantime right? Wondering what you can do right now? If you're wanting to start somewhere today then I recommend considering the tips I have laid out above, and starting with one herbal or adrenal nutrient complex formula that makes sense for you. I encourage you to do your research.
By starting slow, you can pay close attention to how your body feels and how it feels with what you have added.
Example: After checking in with your gut health and determining what stage of adrenal fatigue you are in, you can start with a one adrenal focused herbal or glandular supplement/formula and see how you feel while on it.
Start with co-factor nutrients as mentioned above or an adrenal formula that includes these nutrients along with some sort of adaptogenic properties
ake note of certain symptoms you are experiencing and gauge them between 1 and 10 so you can look back and see how these change after taking the supplement for a few weeks. For example, you can note questions like the following:
How tired are you in the morning on a scale of 1 to 10?
How tired are you in the afternoon at 3:00 on a scale of 1 to 10?
How wired are you in the evening on a scale of 1 to 10?
Re-assess after 3 weeks and see how things are going
Remember that with the adrenals finding the right support for you can be very much a trial and error process, this is enhanced by the fact that as your support your body in "adapting" to stress and situations with "adaptogenic herbs", that sometimes they adapt to the supplements you are taking. On this note, adrenal support formulas need to be monitored and assessed and re-interpreted fairly regularly to help keep them effective. We recommend sticking with some sort of adrenal supportive supplement regimen for at least 3 months when it comes to working towards recovery, and if further support is needed after 3 months you can re-asses and re-structure the regimen as needed.
Supplements can be confusing in general on a good day, but throw something complicated like adrenal fatigue into the mix and it seems like it gets a whole lot more complicated doesn't it? I made you a quick guide to help bring more clarity on how to use supplements to support adrenal fatigue effectively (and safely). I hope this brings a If you have yet to be tested and want to start supporting your adrenals with supplements- this list of herbs and nutrients that you can use in the various stages of adrenal fatigue are all laid out for you in the guide below!
As I mentioned, though this is just one part of the recovery puzzle it can be a great help and an awesome support to the rest of your self care and recovery steps.
I have seen clients eating all the right food and taking all the right supplements, but not progressing with their recovery at the level that they were hoping because of the fact that they were neglecting the mindfulness component and self-care in other areas. The needs and care each body needs is unique, just like us.
Wishing you all the best on your path to recovery and if you have a supplement that has absolutely been a life saver along your recovery journey, please share it in the comments below along with what stage of adrenal fatigue you used it in.
All the best,
Danielle

11 Affirmations for Adrenal Fatigue Recovery
One of the most common questions I get is how I healed my stage 3 adrenal fatigue without drugs and in just months.
Here's the truth—it was a process. It was collaboration of changes in my diet, lifestyle, stress reduction and more. But once I committed to healing on all levels, my healing went into fast forward mode. Today, I want to share one of the most powerful tools that came from somewhere I least expected.
At that time, I was becoming curious about holistic health and the idea of addressing all aspects of the SELF to heal the physical body. That's when I came across the book, Heal Your Body, by Louise Hays.
This is where I started learning about the power of affirmations.
Why are Affirmations so Powerful For Healing?
First, we must understand the power of my own thoughts in relationship to our physical health. To put it simply, our physical body mirrors our thoughts and beliefs. So when we are suffering with conditions like adrenal fatigue, learning how to use positive affirmations to shift my thinking opens us up to powerful and dramatic healing.
It's so easy to get frustrated with adrenal fatigue. Everything seems hard when you're always exhausted. And not getting quality sleep is the worst.
When I was miserable and exhausted everyday, the practice of positive affirmations helped to fill my worried and hopeless mind with positive messages and in turn, they kept my spirits high. And what was even cooler than that, I started to see my physical body start to respond to the positive messages I was sending it.
Once I realized the power of my thoughts were directly connected to what was going on in my physical body it opened me up for amazing healing to flow in.
Let’s be honest there is a lot of negativity in this world and if you get caught up it in it will take us down!
Would you like more control, so your current state of health doesn't take you down, but instead lifts you up?
We must realize affirmations can be negative or positive. If we talk about how bad things are, we are affirming it. And in turn, we are welcoming in more of the same. Our words are powerful beyond measure.
Luckily, though the opposite is true too. When we fill our mind with positive message that make us feel better we can attract more positive things into your life, like healing and great health.
how do you make the shift in your thinking?
The real power comes when we learn to recognize the negative thought in the moment and then re-frame it. And don't worry practicing affirmations is not masking or burying thoughts and emotions to fester up later.
It's about recognizing your thoughts, gaining self awareness. It's okay to be with those feelings for a moment. Then you have a choice: to stay in this negative place or replace the negative thought with a or neutral or positive one.
It's choosing to look at the situation in a completely different way. This has the power to you open up to new insights and new possibilities.
You might not believe in the power of positive affirmations until you give it a fair try for yourself.
So, when you do find yourself in a dark, sad, worried or mad state (and we all experience these times and there is no shame it in) here's where to turn...
11 positive affirmations that will lift you up and open the floods gates to healing...
Why are positive affirmations even necessary, you might be asking? Well, they aren't necessary if you're happy with your life and your current health.
But if you want a better, healthier and happier life you need to spend more time thinking of what you want, instead of the lack there of.
Again, we must understand our physical body mirrors our thoughts, beliefs, and feelings.
So what it all comes down to my friend is choosing thoughts that make you feel better so you can attack more pleasing and satisfying experiences, great health, ...
Remember reciting affirmations are not about ignoring or masking your problems, but rather retraining your brain to look at situations in a different way.
So now what?
Here’s how to use affirmations:
1) Tweak the above to work for you or make your own.
2) Choose a couple at a time or all 11.
3) Write them down in a journal or notebook. Put them in clear view, like on your bathroom mirror or your fridge.
4) Read them aloud to yourself at least twice daily, I recommend first thing in the morning and right before you go to bed.
It's that simple. Ready to open up the floods gate to healing?
Which affirmation is your favorite? Or share your very own affirmation with me.
Happy and healing vibes,
Angela
